Side Saddle : Have a go!
Twenty enthusiastic ladies all tried the art of side saddle riding on 20th October under the watchful guidance of Donita and Charlie from the Derbyshire Side Saddle Association. These instructors provided expert tuition all day long and all the riders thoroughly enjoyed the new experience with three riders even attempting to jump! It was so successful that we have organised another day for Saturday 3rd November and several of the original riders are coming again to try and perfect their positions.

subject to stringent testing and inspections but passed with
flying colours thanks to the dedicated and committed staff
who care for the horses on our yard.

ELAND LODGE HUNTER TRIALS
SUNDAY 3RD JUNE
We held our second Hunter Trials of the year on Sunday 3rd
June. These cross country events are sponsored this year by
Horseware Ireland, manufacturers of quality horse and rider
wear, and they provided very colourful rosettes to the first
six in each class together with vouchers to spend in the Eland
Lodge Country Store.
Following substantial rainfall the previous week, the sun
shone on the day, giving perfect going for the 230 horses
and riders who took part. The course itself looked magnificent,
newly mown, brightly flagged and consisting of professionally
designed, purpose built fences, some of which were used in
the British Eventing Horse Trials which were held earlier
this year.
There were six classes comprising Mini, Novice, Novice Pairs
(where riders compete in twos), Intermediate, Intermediate
Pairs and culminating in the Open class when horses and riders
took on the most challenging fences of the day.
The Mini class was won by James Hemming from Stone, riding
Smartie Pants. This partnership beat the other twenty nine
competitors in their class whilst second place went to Jane
Leese and Toby although there were only 6 penalties separating
them.
Sue Ellen and Peter Brake certainly made their long journey
from Sherbourne in Dorset worthwhile. They brought four horses
with them and Sue Ellen won the Novice Class riding Flash
by just .2 of a penalty. She then rode Flash again in the
Novice Pairs with her husband who rode Jinx and they won this
class too. They qualified for the prestigious South Essex
Insurance Brokers British Horse Society Cross Country Championships.
Qualifiers for this competition are held all over the country
and the Championship Final is to be held at Eland Lodge on
30th September this year.
The Intermediate Class went to Stephi Farmer riding Ruby
Jones whilst the Intermediate Pairs class was won by Hayley
Oliver and Jodie Beswitherick riding Absolution and Diamond
Diazamor.
Fifteen riders braved the Open course and Jolie Bishop took
first place riding Jolly Good Show. Local sisters, Annabel
and Nicola Nelson, were second and third respectively riding
their almost matching coloured horses, Dream On and Dickey
Mint.

SHOW JUMPING AT ELAND LODGE
Eland Lodge has been very busy with its show jumping events
so far this season. We started our B.S.J.A. shows on Tuesday
4th April and these have been held every Tuesday since. The
Clear Round class acts as a warm up for horses or those who
have not competed much before and then most horses continue
into the Derby House British Novice class which follows. This
class has been very popular and we have seen some very promising
horses competing.
The Equissage Discovery class follows on from this and the
first prize of £30 has been hotly contested whilst the
more experienced horse and rider combinations then go on to
compete in the 1.05m Open class which is the last class of
the evening.
As well as the Tuesday evening shows we are also holding
several weekend competitions too – please check our
schedule of events for details!
We held a BSJA Junior Show on Saturday 12th May. This included
a Junior British Novice Second Round for which we had almost
eighty competitors. The winner was Murphy’s Pie ridden
by C Beeson.
Our unaffiliated competitions are made up of classes which
start at ground level and then rise to a maximum of 75cm and
classes which commence at 75cm and rise to a maximum of 1.05m.
These are run on alternative Wednesday evenings. Please check
our schedule for dates.
These evening shows have been very well attended and competition
is fierce particularly as competitors are avidly trying to
accumulate points in our show jumping league. The riders with
the most points will be awarded a trophy which will be presented
at our End of Season Championship Show on Sunday 23rd September.
We held an unaffiliated show on Sunday 20th May and full
results can be viewed on our Events page attached to that
date.
We hope to see you at a competition soon!

ELAND LODGE HUNTER TRIALS
SUNDAY 6TH MAY
Eland Lodge in conjunction with their sponsor, Horseware
Ireland, hosted their first Hunter Trials of the season on
Sunday 6th May. This event attracted over 200 competitors,
all of whom seemed to enjoy the course immensely.
Their were six categories beginning with a Mini Class which
attracted many novice horses and novice riders all of whom
enjoyed the experience and found it very beneficial as an
introduction to cross country.
We then ran a Novice Class followed by a Novice Pairs. Riding
in pairs is good fun and also helps less experienced or nervous
combinations to conquer the many inviting and interesting
fences.
The Intermediate Class attracted the most entries of the
day and this was followed by an Intermediate Pairs class and
the day culminated with an Open Class.
Horseware Ireland generously provided the rosettes and prizes
and the winners of each class were delighted to receive a
smart navy day rug as a souvenir of their successful day.
Full results can be seen on our Events Page attached to the
Hunter Trial listing but listed below are the riders who qualified
for the South Essex Insurance Brokers Cross Country Championships
2007:

UNAFFILIATED DRESSAGE – SATURDAY 28TH APRIL
UK RIDERS RIDE AND RELAX CHALLENGE QUALIFER 2007
Almost 80 horse and rider combinations attended our unaffiliated
dressage competition on Saturday 28th April. Both the Preliminary
classes were very busy but everything ran smoothly and to
time thanks to our judges, Peter Crafts and Fiona Shipley.
The Novice classes were not quite so full but competition
was fierce with some very close scores in both classes.
Gemma Hartley won the Restricted Section of Preliminary 12
on her nine year old bay gelding, “Oberon”. This
was the pair’s first outing together and Gemma was delighted
with the result.
Nicola Nelson won the Junior Section of Preliminary 1 on
her attractive coloured horse, “Dickey Mint”.
Her sister, Ananbel, was also riding an almost matching coloured
horse called “Dream On” and they made a striking
sight together in the collecting ring.
Claire Llewellyn rode “Dutchman’s Choice”
into first place in the Restricted Section of Novice 25. “Dutchman”
was also ridden by her mother, Ann, in Novice 26 where they
gained 3rd place whilst this class was won by “Anfield
Tobias” and Nicola Chadwick.

ELAND LODGE BRITISH EVENTING HORSE TRIALS – 7TH APRIL
2007
ELAND LODGE hosted its third Spring affiliated Horse Trials
on Easter Saturday. The sun shone and competitors, friends
and spectators all thoroughly enjoyed their day spent in beautiful
Staffordshire countryside amidst which lies the beautifully
designed, immaculate, well maintained cross country course.
Over 260 horse and rider combinations started and these were
split into six sections, three Intros, two Pre-Novices and
one Open Pre Novice. Many riders were disappointed to have
been balloted out of this event as it was well over subscribed
but Eland Lodge Equestrian ran a waiting list and people were
still being slotted in just hours prior to the start of the
competition.
The best Intro dressage score of 26.3 was earned by Mrs Emma
Castle riding Castle Lux and this combination went on to win
Section B with no further penalties during the show jumping
and cross country phases. The leading dressage score in the
Pre Novice sections was 23.5 and this was awarded to Mrs Virginia
Turnbull riding “Simply Best” who certainly lived
up to his name in this phase! The combination finished their
day in 2nd Place in Pre Novice Section E having had 8 penalties
in the show jumping phase and so they were pipped to First
Place by Miss Heather Owen riding Smartie Pants, a skewbald
mare measuring just 15.2hh.proving that size isn’t everything!
Virginia was not too disappointed though as her other horse,
“Hasu” was placed 3rd in this section providing
a very good day for his rider!
The show jumping course was designed and built by B.S.J.A.
Judge and Builder, Sue Stephenson and the course jumped well
causing few problems. Many competitors were very pleased to
find that this phase was held in the large all-weather arena
and many commented on how well they found that the surface
rode.
The cross country phase commenced just before 10am so all
spectators were able to see some of the action whatever time
they arrived. This year the course was designed by Stuart
Buntine and built by Ernie Ashford and very impressive it
looked too! The course started in the same place as the Horse
Trials last Summer with a Brush Fence as the first fence and
this was followed by the Eland Lodge Arch. From here riders
jumped a hedge and then commenced their descent into the natural
amphitheatre which the course provides. This makes it very
popular from a non rider’s perspective as most of the
jumps can be viewed from the same spot. This year the Ariat
Brick Kiln Steps were at number 10 for the Intros and number
11 for the Pre Novices, they are on the most distant part
of the course but again can be seen from all venues. They
were followed by the water complex which was built only last
year. The Intro sections jumped 17 fences and the Pre Novice
sections jumped 18 as they had an extra loop over the Bounce
into the Wood at Fence 17 and jumped the Log Pile out at Fence
18. They also jumped the Broken Bridge at Fence 13 but omitted
some of the more straight forward options which had been jumped
by the Intro Sections and which make this such an excellent
course for young and novice horses and riders. There were
many clear cross country rounds during the day and a large
amount of happy riders!
Eland Lodge will be hosting their next British Eventing Horse
Trials on Wednesday 8th August and Thursday 9th August this
year. They are also running many show jumping and dressage
competitions over the next six months together with four Hunter
Trials and an unaffiliated One Day Event on 15th July so if
you have not already read one of their comprehensive annual
programmes please send a stamped addressed envelope to: Eland
Lodge Equestrian, Newborough Road, Draycott-in-the-Clay, Ashbourne,
Derbyshire, DE6 5HD. John and Veronica Coupland and their
team are sure to provide a warm and enthusiastic welcome to
all competitors, both new and old!

EASTER EGG HUNT
Well over 180 riders took part in our annual Easter Egg Hunt
on Easter Monday amid glorious Spring sunshine. Our cross
country course was open for the first time following our British
Eventing Horse Trials which had been held on the previous
Saturday and riders and helpers eagerly followed the specially
thought out clues with the first one being in our shop. “Hunters”
then went outside into our picnic area before they headed
out on to the course. Here there were a further seventeen
clues, some of which were easy and some of which caused riders
to rack their brains! The Hunt ended with riders going back
into the shop to claim their own Easter Egg, a welcome sight
after all that fresh air, brain power and exercise!

“WARM UP FOR THE NEW SEASON” DRESSAGE
COMPETITION – SUNDAY 4TH MARCH
We started our new season of competition with a record entry
on Sunday 4th March for our unaffiliated dressage. Despite
monsoon-like weather conditions competitors bravely carried
on and tried to ignore the torrential rain and winds.
There were two Preliminary Classes and two Freestyle classes
including a Freestyle Pairs. We also ran a “Walk and
Trot” test following this inaugural class last November.
This class proved to be so popular then that we decided to
run one again at the start of this new season. The aim of
this class is to encourage less experienced riders to “have
a go” and many riders were setting foot between the
boards for the very first time. There were also a number of
young horses who were having their first attempt at dressage
and this class was the most heavily supported of them all.
